SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Lead Space & Equipment Control Analyst is directly responsible for proper sizing and make-up of trains throughout the Amtrak System in accordance with System Fleet Plan. The position constantly monitors booking levels adding/reducing consists where warranted to increase revenue and minimize costs and is directly responsible for adjusting inventory levels to ensure all available seats are offered for sale. This position provides direction to yards and facilities both verbally and in written form with respect to proper train make-up and movement of all equipment. During service disruptions this position takes a leadership role in developing alternative operating plans that minimize passenger inconvenience and is directly responsible for ensuring that all equipment is rebalanced
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides real-time direction both verbally and in written form to Division yards/facilities throughout the Amtrak system for the proper make-up of passenger trains in accordance with System Fleet Plan.
- Directs Division yards/facilities in the manipulation of cars and locomotives to ensure the maintenance schedules of the Mechanical Department are met and all equipment remains compliant with Federal regulations.
- Responsible for leading daily equipment conference calls with Division yard/facilities with respect to train make-up and equipment moves.
- Directly responsible for analyzing real-time conditions such as booking levels or horsepower requirements adding/reducing consists where warranted reducing costs and increasing revenues.
- Direct responsibility for daily and long-term capacity planning which involves monitoring ridership and analyzing ridership trends adding extra equipment lines where needed to ensure maximum revenue.
- Directly responsible for implementing Holiday programs and making adjustments to the programs where possible based ridership needs and equipment availability to ensure maximum revenue.
- Directly responsible for approval of Special Trains, Private Car movements and all equipment movements throughout the Amtrak System.
- Directly responsible for adjusting both inventory and consist information in the Arrow system in a timely basis so all available seats are offered for sale and/or the potential for standee conditions are reduced or eliminated while providing an accurate manifest for on-board crews.
- Takes leadership role during service disruptions in conjunction with the System Operations Duty Officer to develop alternative operating plans in the event of service disruptions so that passenger inconvenience is minimized. This position is directly responsible to ensure that equipment is re-balanced, and locomotives have sufficient fuel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in Business, Transportation, Logistics or related field of study OR an equivalent combination of education, training and work experience
- Intermediate level experience six (6) years working in Operations, Business or related field is required
- In lieu of a degree, ten (10) years of relevant experience is required
- Demonstrated aptitude for working with and through a diverse work force at all levels of the organization to achieve a common objective (be it business-as-usual train operations or recovery from a major service disruption)
- Proficiency using computer applications such as Microsoft Office suite of business software
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior functional experience in train operations, mechanical, equipment utilization, field transportation management, manpower utilization, stations/customer service.
- Thorough understanding of the interrelationship that train operations, equipment and manpower play in providing service to our passengers.
- Working knowledge of Amtrak’s route structure, operating rules and practices, passenger equipment types and general train makeup characteristics.
- Working knowledge and/or qualification on any railroad book-of-rules, AMT-2, AMT-3, AMT-4 or AMT-5.
- Proficiency using computer applications such as Microsoft Office suite of business software.
- Proficiency using Amtrak’s mainframe computer applications such as Arrow and CICS.
- Practical work experience with Amtrak labor agreements, safety and environmental regulations and applicable federal codes and statutes governing railroad operations.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- The position works three (3) twelve (12) hours on, then three (3) days relief off, then four (4) twelve (12) days on, then four (4) days relief off (7 work days bi-weekly).
- Ability to act upon incomplete information in a time-critical environment in order to begin developing and implementing recovery plans as soon as service disruptions first occur.
- Ability to effectively convey information and instruction to field supervision (trainmasters, road foreman, managers of train operations and others) both verbally and in written form.
- Able to work any shift; 24/7; 365 days per year

The salary/hourly range is $94,300 - $122,256. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
