This position can be located at any Amtrak location on the Northeast Corridor.
This is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole and absolute discretion.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Service Engineer supports rolling stock equipment and develops engineering programs and processes to implement and improve the quality and reliability of Positive Train Control (PTC) across the Amtrak system. The Service Engineer reports to the Mechanical Rolling Stock Equipment department while solving advanced technical problems, supporting interoperability efforts with Amtrak, state rolling stock and host railroads, and communicating with resources both internally and externally to meet business objectives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide field and technical assistance to terminals and maintenance facilities.
- Develop and review technical specifications and procedures for train control systems for both Amtrak and state rolling stock equipment.
- Lead in-depth troubleshooting and development of solution packages that extend beyond routine diagnostic work.
- Support authorizing component upgrades, updates, and replacements, including qualifying vendors and products with engineering documentation and drawings reviews as necessary.
- Work with Fleet Managers to provide design and procedure improvements related to equipment problems which are typically design flaws, retrofit, and field modifications, and maintenance shortcomings.
- Provide engineering expertise and design improvements to investigate systemic problems, reduce failures, and increase availability of equipment.
- Participate in field tests, safety inspections, and warranty programs for both Amtrak and state rolling stock equipment.
- Basic computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft computer software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point and Project.
- Ability to develop and implement Mechanical procedures, Modifications, SMP’s and Maintenance Bulletins and Alerts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree required OR equivalent combiation of training,education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
- Demonstrated experience in Positive Train Control (PTC) including Advanced Civil Speed Enforcement System (ACSES), Incremental Train Control System (ITCS), or Interoperable Electronic Train Management System (I-ETMS).
- Demonstrated experience in Amtrak or Class 1 railway rolling stock maintenance in technical roles involving inspections, commissioning new rolling stock, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical documents for troubleshooting and design changes.
- Knowledgeable in areas of North American railway safety and regulatory practices including, but not limited to, AAR and FRA standards and rules.
- Knowledge of train control regulations, signal rules, operating rules related to train operations, and physical features of the right of way.
- Ability to download and diagnose cab signal and ACSES logs for troubleshooting purposes.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 2 or more years of experience preferred
- Master's degree in an engineering discipline or PE license.
- Working knowledge of the 49CFR236 and basic qualifications.
- Significant engineering experience with a railroad or other technically similar agency.
- Working knowledge of programming, scripting, and Linux OS.
- General understanding of materials management functions and creation of Bills of Materials and material inventory changes.

- Frequently or occasionally subject to travel throughout and outside the region as required (e.g., via airplane, train, automobile).
- Occasionally works in crisis situations requiring fast, long-reaching decisions based on incomplete information/data.

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
The salary/hourly range is $74,750 - $96,870 for the Service Engineer l position and $80,160 - $103,890 for the Service Engineer ll position. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
