Job Summary
The Senior Manager will own one or more IT processes within one functional area. Manage services provided to one or more internal and external customer(s). Work on multiple projects as a technical delivery team owner, and sometimes as a project leader while managing matrixed resources. Responsible for systems analysis, design development, integration enhancement, maintenance and support. Work closely with clients, business analysts and team members within the Systems Design & Development job family to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions. Align these solutions with business and IT strategies and in compliance with the organization’s architectural standards. Responsible for designing, coding, testing, implementing and supporting application software that is delivered on time and within budget as part of the Full Systems Development Life Cycle. Participate in component and data architecture design, technology planning, product evaluation, advanced testing processes and buy vs. build recommendations. Possess a solid understanding of development, testing and integration methodologies. Maintain knowledge of current and emerging IT products, services and processes. Adjust to constant business change. Provide client support, consultation and subject matter expertise for system development, maintenance and support.
Essential Functions
- Provide subject matter expertise (SME) while managing across diverse teams.
- Responsible for aligning information technology planning with the business strategy.
- Work with business partners to understand business needs.
- Lead and participate in an IT advisory board(s) to manage IT services demand.
- Provide input to business technology planning within their functional area.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
- Plus 9 years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
- Plus 11 years of relevant work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Hands‑on experience developing and supporting C++ applications, including performance‑critical or systems‑level software. Skilled in code reviews, debugging, and guiding best practices for efficient, maintainable, and reliable C++ development.
- Extensive experience managing development projects
- Hands-on experience using Jira to manage backlogs, sprints, dependencies, and releases in agile environments. Able to configure workflows, dashboards, and reports to provide clear visibility, drive accountability, and support effective delivery across teams.
- Strong hands‑on Java development experience building and maintaining scalable applications. Capable of guiding design and architecture, performing code reviews, and mentoring developers while ensuring code quality, performance, and security best practices.
- Practical experience implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines to automate builds, testing, and deployments. Focused on improving release reliability, enforcing quality gates, and promoting DevOps practices to accelerate delivery.
- Proven track record of progressively providing technical and project leadership to deliver enterprise scale systems
- Strong Agile delivery experience
- Proven experience with API’s
- Experience in managing teams and building relationships with people at a variety of levels
- Demonstrated ability to launch and deliver one or more IT project(s) on time and within budget
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
The salary/hourly range is $149,400.00 – $193,644.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
