Job Summary

The Senior Systems Engineer serves as a technical leader within the Digital Employee Experience (DEX) Sustained Engineering team, responsible for the design, administration, support, automation, and continuous improvement of enterprise collaboration and productivity platforms. This role provides advanced engineering expertise across Microsoft 365 technologies including Exchange Online, Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), Teams, SharePoint Online, and related cloud services. 

The position acts as a Tier 3 escalation resource, leading complex technical initiatives, resolving critical service issues, driving automation efforts, and ensuring platform stability, security, and performance. The engineer collaborates closely with business stakeholders, infrastructure teams, cybersecurity, and application owners to deliver scalable solutions aligned with enterprise architecture and strategic technology goals. 

Essential Functions

  • Lead the engineering, administration, and support of Microsoft 365 collaboration and messaging platforms, with a primary focus on Exchange Online. 
  • Serve as the highest technical escalation point for complex incidents, service requests, and platform-related issues. 
  • Design, implement, and support enterprise messaging solutions including:  

    • Exchange Online
    • Shared Mailboxes
    • Distribution Groups
    • Mail Flow and Transport Rules
    • SMTP Relay
    • Email Security and Compliance
    • Hybrid Messaging Environments
  • Administer Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) identity services and integrate cloud-based authentication technologies. 
  • Develop and maintain PowerShell automation and Microsoft Graph-based solutions to improve operational efficiency and reduce manual effort. 
  • Monitor platform health, capacity, performance metrics, and service availability. 
  • Lead systems development with a focus on clear requirements, documented methodology, and robust testing.
  • Consult with various stakeholders during development planning, taking the lead on technical issues.
  • Ensure alignment with industry and company standards, adheres to quality procedures, and provides ongoing maintenance and oversight.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • 7 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience administering Microsoft Exchange Online or hybrid Exchange environments. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Entra ID 9Azure AD)
  • Experience troubleshooting enterprise-scale Microsoft 365 services.
  • Experience developing PowerShell automation solutions.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • 9 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience supporting large enterprise Microsoft 365 environments. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Graph API integrations and automation. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams, SharePoint Online, Intune, and Microsoft Defender technologies. 
  • Experience supporting identity and access management solutions utilizing Microsoft Entra ID. 
  • Microsoft certifications such as:  
    • Microsoft 365 Certified: Messaging Administrator Associate 
    • Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert 
    • Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate
    • Azure Administrator Associate 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expert knowledge of Exchange Online administration and architecture. 
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft 365 tenant management. 
  • Advanced PowerShell scripting and automation skills. 
  • Advanced knowledge of email security technologies including SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and Microsoft Defender for Office 365. 
  • Knowledge of Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, identity synchronization, and hybrid identity solutions. 
  • Ability to work effectively under deadlines and in a flexible environment
  • Educating project team members on business unit goals and guiding junior resources
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills

Environmental Conditions/Physical Demands

The salary/hourly range is $113,200.00 – $146,664.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
