Job Summary
The Sr. Business Analyst – Long Distance (LD) plays a critical role in enabling commercial performance and customer experience improvements across Amtrak’s Long Distance Service Line (~15 routes, ~$800M revenue). This position goes beyond data analysis to include process support, strategic enablement, project coordination, and stakeholder engagement. The analyst will help run the LD performance-management cadence, translate strategic priorities into actionable workstreams, and provide insights that drive decision-making. The role requires strong analytical skills combined with the ability to manage processes, coordinate cross-functional initiatives, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Essential Functions
- Support weekly and monthly performance reviews by preparing insights, documenting outcomes, and tracking action items.
- Translate Sr. Manager priorities into actionable workstreams and charters.
- Assist in preparing LD sections of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) and Five-Year Plan.
- Track and validate initiatives aimed at improving customer experience (e.g., on-time performance, cleanliness, Food & Beverage satisfaction).
- Monitor benefit realization for P&L, revenue, ridership, and CSI improvement initiatives.
- Support Sr. Manager in managing timelines, deliverables, and risk tracking for LD projects (schedule optimization, pricing pilots, fleet strategy).
- Prepare materials for stakeholder updates and leadership reviews.
- Contribute to evaluation of business cases and prioritization of investments.
- Track progress against P&L, revenue, operating and capital targets.
- Serve as a liaison for data and insights during cross-functional meetings.
- Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to diverse audiences.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
- Plus 3 years of relevant work experience.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; proficiency in Excel and BI tools (Power BI, Tableau).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to present insights clearly to stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented with ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in transportation, travel, or hospitality industries.
- Familiarity with KPI frameworks and performance-management processes.
- Exposure to cross-functional project work and enterprise planning cycles.
- Prior railroad industry experience.
- 5 years of relevant work experience.

The salary/hourly range is $78,600.00 – $101,844.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
